Women’s Rights in Egypt

I didn’t mean for this to be “bash Egypt” day on the blog. Blame the insidious anti-authoritarian bias of the mainstream media…

The Christian Science Monitor has an article about the deplorable increase in the harassment of women in Egypt.  The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights recently released a study stating that 83% of women reported being harassed, with half saying it happens every day. The trend seems to be worsening as conservative cultural and religious influence continues to gain strength.

The Egyptian Parliament is planning to consider a measure that criminalizes harassment and makes it easier for women to report it to police.
