Public Opinion After Gaza

Marc Lynch reports on the first public opinion poll conducted throughout the Palestinian territories since the Gaza war. As many expected, Hamas seems to have gained support and Fateh has weakened. Some highlights from the poll are as follows:

  • 49.9% of Palestinians were very dissatisfied with Mahmoud Abbas’ response while only 13.2% were very satisfied.
  • If elections were held today, Hamas would win a slim victory with 28.6% to Fateh’s 27.9%. Notably a 19.3% increase in Hamas support since April.
  • 41% oppose peace negotiations while 53.5% support military operations against Israel.
  • While many are optimistic with the election of President Obama, 28.1%, more believe nothing will change, 48.2%.
