NCHR Releases Full Report on Rabaa Dispersal

The National Council for Human Rights released the full report of the results of a fact-finding investigation on the dispersal of the Rabaa’ al-Adeweya sit-in on Monday. The report stated, “the sit-in caused a split within society and left 632 people dead, 1492 injured and nearly 800 arrested.” According to the report, the investigations focused on “the most brutal and outrageous violations” of the sit-in from June 28 until August 14. The NCHR also screened videos of violations committed by police, including the shooting of Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Beltagy’s daughter, Asmaa al-Beltagy, during the press conference. NCHR president Mohamed Fayek told reporters “We only tell the truth, which is the start of any transitional justice.”

Doctors Reject Mehleb’s Call to End Strike
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb called on striking doctors Sunday to suspend their strike for three months in order for his government to consider and address their demands. After discussing the issue at Saturday’s Cabinet meeting, Mehleb met with Health Minister Adel al-Adawy and representatives of the Doctor’s and Pharmacists’ Syndicates declaring their demands “legitimate.” Head of the striking committee Ahmed Shosha told al-Ahram that the doctors rejected Mehleb’s request, demanding higher wages and increased public healthcare spending.

Muslim Brotherhood Blamed for Checkpoint Attack

Six military officers were killed in an attack on a checkpoint near Cairo Saturday. Military officials claimed unidentified Muslim Brotherhood members shot at the six officers as they prayed neared the checkpoint. Both Jamiat al-Islamiya and the Muslim Brotherhood denounced the attack in statements, emphasizing the need “to preserve the lives of citizens, their property, blood, and freedoms.” Interim President Adly Mansour called on the Muslim Brotherhood to abandon violence adding that he has participated “in any negotiations with the Brotherhood.” The statement came following an emergency meeting of the National Defense Council discussing the attack. Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb also convened his Ministerial Cabinet Saturday evening. The Cabinet made the decision to increase security around vital and strategic utilities.
