Advocacy Director Cole Bockenfeld Quoted on Gulf Politics

In a long-form piece in Huffington Post’s Highline, POMED Advocacy Director Cole Bockenfeld is quoted on the role of political Islam in Gulf politics.

The Arab Spring created a schism among the Sunni Gulf states. Qatar threw its weight behind the protesters, arguing that repressing political Islam was a self-defeating strategy. Its Al Jazeera network gave a platform to advocates of the uprising. The UAE and Saudi Arabia, however, wanted nothing to do with it. “Qatar has placed this long bet that in the end, political Islam is going to be the next big thing in the region,” says Cole Bockenfeld, advocacy director for the Project on Middle East Democracy. “The UAE and Saudi have been pushing back, leading a kind of counterrevolution.”
