Research Associate, Editor of policy brief series

Description:
POMED is currently seeking to hire a Research Associate to edit and oversee a new policy brief series, as well as contribute to other projects. Strong candidates will be entrepreneurial individuals with a deep interest in U.S. foreign policy and the Middle East. They will have outstanding writing skills.

POMED is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to examining how genuine democracies can develop in the Middle East and how the U.S. can best support that process. Through dialogue, research, and advocacy, we work to strengthen the constituency for U.S. policies that peacefully support democratic reform in the Middle East. POMED’s new policy brief series seeks to elevate the voices of scholars, practitioners, and others with first-hand knowledge of the Middle East.

This is a full-time position offering a competitive salary and benefits. The Research Associate will edit and oversee POMED’s new policy brief series. In addition, s/he will contribute to web-based and other initiatives focused on building policy dialogue, with a potential focus on Egypt. The Research Associate will have the opportunity to attend and support policy conferences in the Middle East; additional travel is also possible. S/he will be encouraged to comment widely in relevant publications and media outlets and to engage substantively with other researchers and think tanks in Washington. Finally, the Research Associate will help develop project proposals and seek additional funding for POMED’s research and writing efforts.

Responsibilities include:
- Edit series of policy briefs (70%)

* Provide overall direction and development of the tone, quality and format for policy briefs
* Edit, produce, and disseminate briefs
* Develop contacts and roster of potential authors and contributors, and solicit articles for policy brief series

- Contribute to effort to build relationships and policy discussions through web-based formats (20%)

* Support design of new website, to include Arabic content and web 2.0 capacities, and contribute content for that website
* Help develop new initiatives (including writing grant proposals) such as joint publications, translation projects, and videoconference events to stimulate policy-relevant dialogue between Washington and regional experts

- Oversee discussion sessions at POMED conferences in the Middle East and North Africa, and assist in drafting a short final report (10%)

* Attend conferences in the Middle East, including possibly Egypt, Kuwait and Morocco
* Record notes from discussion sessions leading to creation of final recommendations
* Assist with production of final report from MENA conferences

Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have at least three years of relevant work experience. A graduate degree is preferred but not necessary. Candidates should have exceptionally strong writing skills and attention to detail. They should have some knowledge of other Washington-based organizations and writers supportive of progress in the Middle East.  Professional experience in journalism and/or communications is highly desirable. Experience with web development, maintenance, and blogging is desirable. Successful candidates will demonstrate initiative and entrepreneurialism and/or have experience writing successful grant proposals. Candidates should have knowledge of and experience in the Middle East. Some Arabic or Farsi language skills are required.

Dialogue Programs Internship

Duties
:
POMED is hiring an intern to work with our Dialogue Programs for Fall 2010. This position is part-time and unpaid. The Dialogue Programs Internship provides a unique opportunity to inform key debates over the future of U.S. policy towards the Middle East, build skills and knowledge, and engage with leading thinkers.

The intern’s primary responsibility will be managing a daily news update on Egypt. This requires monitoring English and Arabic news sources that comment on political reform issues in Egypt. The intern will summarize news reports to compile and send a succinct e-newsletter on a daily basis. In addition, the Dialogue Programs Intern will assist with panel and roundtable discussions hosted by POMED. This may include research, event design, logistical support, and coordination with speakers and venues.  Finally, the intern will support POMED’s Executive Director in various research projects.

Qualifications:
The POMED Dialogue Programs Intern is chosen each term through a highly competitive application process. Candidates should be deeply motivated individuals with a strong working knowledge of the policy debates surrounding U.S. impact on political reform in the Middle East.

•       BA in relevant field; MA candidates preferred.
•       Must be able to read and understand news articles in Arabic.
•       Strong research and writing skills.
•       Outstanding communication and organizational skills.
•       Detail-oriented; able to multi-task.
•       Prior experience organizing panel discussions/conferences is a plus.

Candidates should be able to work from September through December 2010 on a part-time basis (20 hours per week).

Policy Interns

Description:
POMED is currently hiring Policy Interns for Fall 2010.  The internship offers a unique opportunity to not only observe what happens in the Washington policy community, but to take part. As a Policy Intern you will play a critical role in supporting our work by reporting on congressional hearings and other Washington policy events, writing for POMED’s blog and weekly digest,  representing POMED at various Washington functions, tracking legislation and Congressional votes, and conducting research on U.S. policy.

Qualifications:
Successful applicants will be bright, highly-motivated individuals with strong academic backgrounds and an interest in U.S. foreign policy as it relates to prospects for political reform in the Middle East. Candidates should also be committed to POMED’s mission and principles.  The internships will last from September through December 2010.
