Tunisian Constituent Assembly Set to Elect President
Tunisia’s Constituent Assembly will resume its scheduled activities on Tuesday, and choosing the next president is “at the crux of the agenda.” A swearing-in ceremony will follow, where the current interim president Foued Mebazaa will be charged with the transmission of power to the president- elect. According to Tunisia Live, the new president will then appoint a prime minister, and will invite him to announce the formation his cabinet. The Constituent Assembly will then hold internal elections at a later date to elect five assistant members who will be in charge of general legislation and management; relations with the government, the citizens, and civil society; external relations, communication, and general management.
Additionally, a Tunisian assembly has met to discuss leadership proposals embodied in a “mini-constitution” that will open the way to forming a government. The proposals and the internal regulations of the constituent assembly will come before the full membership after they have sparked debates.
