Marzouki Sworn in as Tunisia’s First Elected President
Moncef Marzouki, a veteran rights activist, was sworn in as Tunisia’s first elected president on Tuesday, and promised to be a leader for all Tunisians. Marzouki said, “Tunisians have proved to the world that they are a civilized people who have the ability and resources to overcome all challenges…the Arab world is watching the Tunisian experience and its success will be a model while its failure would have negative repercussions.” Marzouki stated he would protect and promote health, education, and women’s rights.
State Department Spokesperson Mark Toner congratulated Tunisia and Marzouki saying “it’s another positive step for Tunisia and its democratic transition, and we stand ready to support them as they move forward.” Marzouki promises to work with both the people who elected him and the opposition, as he noted, “I represent a country, a people, a revolution. Long live Tunisia. I say to those members who gave me their votes, thank your for your trust, and for those who did not vote for me, your message has been received … I know that you are going to hold me to account.”
