Weekly Wire – November 28

POMED’s Weekly Wire for November 28 is now available.

Last week, violence erupted in Tahrir Square as Egyptian security forces cracked down on protesters demanding an end to military rule and a firm timetable for the military to transfer power to a civilian government. In Bahrain, the highly-anticipated BICI report documenting human rights violations was released, and the government promised reforms in response. Syria refused to accept terms of an Arab League deal, and the group imposed economic sanctions on the Assad regime. As new governments were seated in Libya and Tunisia, parliamentary elections were held in Morocco and President Saleh agreed to hand over power in Yemen. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) cosponsored a joint resolution to limit arms sales to Bahrain. Look for next week to be dominated by the beginning of Egyptian parliamentary elections amid continued protests, and the Government of Bahrain’s working group to examine the implementation of BICI recommendations and reform.
