SNC Releases Political Program

After officially announcing its creation on October 2nd, the Syrian National Council (SNC) has released its political program. The program states “the goal of the SNC is to build a democratic, pluralistic, and civil state,” and outlines the means and goals for the transitional period and “new Syria.” A few of the objectives the SNC wants to pursue in establishing a democratic state include “Breaking down the existing regime, including all of its operatives and symbols,” and “uniting the efforts by the revolutionary movement and the political opposition…garnering Arab and international support at the individual, public opinion, and official levels.”

In regards to the transitional period, “The SNC will take responsibility, with the military apparatus, to manage the transitional period and guarantee the security and unity of the country once the regime falls,” and will form a transitional government to manage state affairs. The SNC also included general principles for what the new Syria will look like, including “The new Syria guarantees for all its citizens what is declared by international laws in terms of human rights and basic freedom of belief, opinion, expression, assembly, the press, and other rights,” and a democratic civil state.
