Kuwaiti MP: Cabinet Resigns Amid Unrest

Kuwait’s government has resigned in the midst of ongoing unrest after opposition parties staged the country’s “largest ever demonstration” to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah over corruption allegations. “The Kuwaiti cabinet has resigned and the resignations have been accepted by the emir,” opposition MP Khaled al-Sultan said. The Cabinet tendered its resignations just hours before a major protest rally was set to begin, Khaled stated, adding that ”[the opposition is] waiting for the appointment of a new prime minister before parliament is dissolved in order to be assured of fair elections.”
The Cabinet dissolution occurred after an emergency meeting led by Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, but the parliament will continue to hold sessions since its dissolution requires a decree submitted by the government to the Emir.
