Trial of Hosni Mubarak Postponed

The trial of Egypt’s former President, Hosni Mubarak, has been adjourned until December 28th. The decision to postpone the case came as a separate court will decide whether to change the judge presiding over the trial. Judge Ahmed Refaat made the announcement in front of Mubarak, his two sons, the former interior minister and senior police officers.

Mubarak’s trial began August 3rd and he faces a range of charges including involvement in killing protesters. Lawyers representing the families of those killed in the uprising have “raised a suit calling for presiding judge Ahmed Refaat and others on the judges’ panel be replaced.” Refaat has lashed out at critics of the trail in previous sessions, and has defended the court’s integrity.

This comes as the Egyptian military has detained blogger Alaa Abd El Fattah over an accusation of inciting violence. Mona Seif, Abd El Fattah’s sister, told Al Jazeera “He was arrested because the military are trying to find someone else to blame for the massacre that happened on the ninth of October,” and “The truth is that we are actually accusing the military of causing the deaths of at least 27 people and the wounds of more than 100 peaceful protesters.”
