Obama Urges Egypt to Lift Emergency Law
In a phone call with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, President Barack Obama urged Tantawi the SCAF to lift emergency law and end military trials for civilians. President Obama also noted “that the United States supports a strong, peaceful, prosperous and democratic Egypt that responds to the aspirations of its people, and that the outcome of the election is for the Egyptian people to decide.”
The leaders also discussed Egypt’s economic situation with President Obama stating his support for full funding from Congress for assistance to Egypt without conditions. President Obama and Tantawi also “underscored their intention to continue to cooperate closely on counter-terrorism and regional security,” the White House statement said. The underlying notion of the phone call with Tantawi was to “reaffirm the close partnership between the United States and Egypt.”
