Analysis: The Islamic Republic is for Democracy
In the Wall Street Journal today, Mohammed Khazaei argues that the Islamic Republic of Iran has “welcomed the revolution in Egypt,” as it is reminiscent of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979. ”Iran and the new Egypt have embarked on the path of amity and reconciliation that can be rewarding to both nations,” Khazaei writes. In addition, Tehran and Cairo can embark on a new relationship that “enhances their cooperation in multilateral frameworks” specifically in regards to the region’s position within the international community.
In addition, Khazaei argues that Iran’s top priorities is fighting against terrorism and illicit drug traffic. Additionally, Iran is concerned about the “chaos and instability” in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Khazaei writes, “It has pursued good-neighbor policies that have resulted in generous economic assistance and expanded trade and investment relations. All this reflects Iran’s approach to regional cooperation.”
Khazaei also writes that Iran has made “clear its strong opposition to nuclear weapons on moral, political and religious grounds,” and that it does not violate any international obligations with its nuclear program.
