Abul Fotouh Released from Prison

November 17th, 2009 by Jason

Al Arabiya is reporting (Arabic) that Dr. Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh, member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s Guidance Council and Secretary General of the Arab Doctors Union, was released by Egyptian authorities Tuesday morning following an order from state security to release him on Monday evening, five months after his initial arrest. The MB’s Official Arabic Language Website “Ikhwanonline” has confirmed (Arabic) the release of Abul Fotouh who was detained with 13 other Brotherhood leaders on charges of joining of the “International Organization of the Muslim Brotherhood” and money laundering.

The Supreme State Security Prosecutor renewed imprisonment of Abul Fotouh nine consecutive times, while the Criminal Court of North Cairo rejected to continue his custody twice in a row.

Abul Fotouh was previously transported to a hospital based on a request by his legal defense due to his ongoing respiratory problems and has since been breathing through a respirator.

For more information on Abul Fotouh and the clampdown on the Muslim Brotherhood more generally, please refer to our previous post.
