Ahmad Al-Sayed El-Naggar writes that American economic aid to Egypt is “measly” and fails to target the most urgent needs of the Egyptian people, such as poverty alleviation and permanent job creation. In fact, he claims that most U.S. aid to Egypt has been counterproductive, exacerbates Egypt’s trade deficit and benefits the U.S. El-Naggar recommends that USAID could be more effective with programs that support, for example, agricultural productivity or entrepreneurial microfinancing.
You might want to specify that our “economic” aid to Egypt is being called “measly.” He doesn’t really address the security aid until later in the piece when he calls it counterproductive. That’s true enough, but in strict dollar terms it’s a nice chunk of change.
