Muslim Brotherhood Called to the Bar
June 2nd, 2009 by Max
The Egyptian Lawyer’s Syndicate, a professional organization that serves as Egypt’s de facto bar association, has voted to return members of the Muslim Brotherhood to its governing council. The Middle East Times reports that nine of the 12 candidates, which the Brotherhood supported for 15 available seats (on the 41-member council), were victorious in the organization’s internal election.
The Syndicate has been under control of the ruling National Democratic Party for almost a decade, and it is possible that the Brotherhood’s success in re-joining its leadership may have something to do with President Obama’s upcoming trip to Cairo.
