2008: Obama, McCain, and U.S.-Muslim Relations

Over at Post Global, Ghassan Michel Rubeiz says it’s important to take a long-term perspective on U.S.-Muslim relations, recognizing that U.S.-Muslim engagement and cooperation will last well beyond the presidencies of either Barack Obama or John McCain. However, there are a few issues that could have significant effects on U.S. interaction with the Muslim world–bringing stability and unity to Iraq, ending dependence on Middle East oil, and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. How Obama or McCain handle these three things will have a significant effect on the future dynamics of U.S.-Muslim cooperation. Even on Iraq, however, the daylight between the two candidates might not be as broad as we think.
