America’s Democracy Delusion
August 20th, 2008 by Adam
Khalil Al-Anani of the Daily News Egypt writes a scathing article about America’s failure over the past four years to be a real partner in supporting democracy. Al-Anani looks at the cases of Georgia, Libya, and Pakistan to show that “…President Bush’s call to support democracy itself was a mere delusion to protect US interests.” Since American policy has consistently allowed stability and strategic interests to win out over democratic values and human rights, he concludes that, “Our peoples should struggle for their freedom, without waiting for assistance from the US, which has forsaken everybody to protect only its own interests.”
