Hezbollah’s Dilemma
May 15th, 2008 by Pasha
After recent fighting, a Christian Science Monitor editorial argues that Hezbollah’s efforts have empowered Iran. In another editorial, The New York Times rejects President Bush’s idea of giving more aid to the Lebanese Army and recommends diplomacy with Syria and Iran. Michael Young argues at Now Lebanon that Hezbollah has rejected the Lebanese political system, limiting its choices to either full integration with the state or control of the state, hurting the Shi’a population of Lebanon in the process. And a Now Lebanon editorial wishes Hezbollah would use its arms as a bargaining chip in wide-ranging negotiations, which is Hezbollah’s only politically profitable option left according to Now, and laments the unlikelihood of Hezbollah recognizing the need to negotiate.
