Turkey’s Fragile Relations with the U.S.

January 18th, 2008 by Kent

At the Conservative Voice, Scott Sullivan discusses Turkey’s uncomfortable position in regards to U.S. activity in Iraq. The Bush administration’s support for an Iraqi politician with Kurdish sympathies may force Turkey to confront the United States. “President Bush has been at war with Turkey since US forces entered Iraq and opened the way to creation of an independent Kurdish state.”

Michael Rubin at The NRO Corner laments Turkey’s alleged slide from democracy as the ruling Justice and Peace Party appointed judges with Islamic leanings. He believes that the Turkish government’s actions will prove to be problematic for the U.S. government. “While pundits rightly focus on Iraq, Afghanistan and, perhaps, Iran, the loss of Turkey may be nearly as significant when historians look back years from now. “
